Establishing P3 and Product Controls


Serving more than 2.8 million customers across the south west – Wessex Water’s regional water and sewerage business takes a lot of project management. Following an initial Project, Programme and Portfolio (P3M) maturity assessment from our in-house team back in 2018, we returned a year later to re-assess, re-evaluate and make recommendations about where to take Wessex Water’s Information Systems (IS) Programmes next.


Continual improvement is a key ingredient for any organisation. Wessex Water’s IS Programmes enable effective business transformation by defining, planning and delivering IT projects which enable the business to constantly evolve. Our PMO team are working side-by-side with this crucial business unit to help them successfully deliver their portfolios of change programmes and projects – from upgrading operating systems across the business to developing a distribution risk assessment system to carry out network interventions.

How we helped

Establishing a baseline

We carried out extensive interviews with a cross-section of the Wessex Water IS Function and Delivery Teams to elicit knowledge and awareness that would help us understand the baseline.

Investigating the root cause

Diving deeper during the discovery phase was crucial to ensure we got to the root cause of any systemic problems – rather than simply highlighting challenges on the surface.

Analysing extensive data sets

On top of the interviews, we established a consolidated data set by reviewing over 100 artefacts to identify common themes, improvements and rationale for recommendations both in and outside of scope.

Taking a long-term view

By continuing to work closely with the client team to interrogate the impact of our transformation recommendations we formed a long-term strategy to build on our initial review.

Continued learning & development

We rolled out a series of accredited project management learning and development initiatives to build awareness and engagement across the business.
